How I Adopted My Mami

This is a love story really...una historia de amor <3

You see, Mami has wanted a dog for about a decade now. She originally wanted to get a little white fluffy Maltipoo (mix between a Maltheese and Poodle) and call her Ginger. This is a hypo-allergenic dog, has hair, and would be sturdy enough to go on long walks (you know, she doesn't step on it and crush it).

Well, since she lived in an apartment with carpet and had roommates, she never got a dog. Fast forward a couple of months ago when Mami knew she was going to move to her own apartment with wood floors rather than carpet. And she automatically thought she needs to get a pup!

She only wanted to adopt a pup, not buy from a pound or breeder because let's face it, there are plenty of us lost and abandoned pups that need to be rescued!

So she started her search on PetFinder.com and found a bunch of little Maltipoo looking pups in South Florida. Forget about finding one at MDAS (Miami Dade Animal Services), little dogs either get swooped up quickly by adopters or no-kill shelters rescue them and hold them until they can find a furever home.

Well that's what happened to Mami. She applied to a few different rescues and people swooped up the little Maltipoos. Then Mami was planted with an idea...one particular shelter told her that the pup for adoption was so smart and alert and thought he may be a Havanese. Ding, ding, ding! Mami knew at that moment she needed to rescue a Havanese. Hello, a Cuban dog and they're in the family of the Maltheese and are also hypo-allergenic and sturdy size. Fits Mami's parameters perfectly.

Oh boy, so if she thought finding a Maltipoo was hard, Havanese are even more rare to come by. Mami searched PetFinder.com every day in South Florida and all the "candidates" were immediately adopted as soon as they were listed. She also applied to the Havanese Rescue, a non-profit that helps place these pups in foster homes to be adopted out.

Finally, Mami spotted 2 Havanese that fit her "look" (white or beige), and she made a point to meet them on the same day. Well, the first chica was at MDAS and she had already been requested for adoption almost as soon as she was announced on social media channels. Mami knows this because she checked PetFinder.com every day, and noticed at 7am one day that the girl was up for adoption and called before hours to see if she was available, to find out she had been adopted.

The second boy was up at a no-kill shelter in Broward called Animal-Aid, Inc. He was white and kind of skinny and scrawny, and kept calling the shelter every day to see whether he had been adopted, which he hadn't. They told her though, that another havi had just come in that week and they were checking him out and he hadn't even been listed yet. She figured she would stop at Broward Animal Services while she was up there.

So she decided to go to MDAS anyway to see the little Havanese girl and planned to drive up to Broward afterward. No luck with the little Havi chica. Mami drove up to Animal-Aid. She saw the little white boy, but he was so skinny and looked very sad. Poor thing, but wasn't really the right temperament for me.

Then I met the other little boy that had come in that week. It was love at first sight with ME! I played my cards right, I was cool, calm and collected, played enough with Mami but wasn't a hyper maniac. Mami found out that I had been surrendered by my former family because they had a baby and God knows what a pain in the culo he was, well I must have snapped at him or something and they had another baby coming so the jerk parents decided to give me up. Their loss and my gain!

Mami adopted me that day and I had to stay to get neutered (prefer to forget about that), and then she picked me up a week later. I was a conehead lol The second I saw Mami I knew she was the one and she was saving me!

I know she's my Mami, but I love her like my biffle! I'm so looking forward to my new home and life in Miami on the water with Mami! <3
